Lovell Back on the Podium in Crandon
Colorado Springs, CO 7/2/14 - TORC made its first stop at the "Big House" for rounds 7 & 8 of the 2014 season. Lovell Racing has been struggling to find the podium in the burgeoning and highly competitive Pro-Light field but all that changed on the internationally known high speed flowing course of Crandon.
"We take a lot of pride in doing well at Crandon," stated Brad Lovell, "It's very intense but you have to keep your cool. A win here means everything." After a disappointing weekend in Bark River, the team had thrown just about every new part they could on the truck. "We didn't have the speed we are used to in Bark River and had to eliminate everything to find the problem." It was clear to the field that the #44 AMSOIL Magnaflow Pro-Light had once again found its legs as Brad qualified 4th, less that .5 seconds off the leader.
One of the things that makes Crandon unique is a standing "land rush" start. A mistake by any driver can devastate the entire field in turn #1 and the best way to stay clear is to get through the turn before the wreck happens. The BFGoodrich Tires got the ultimate grip and propelled Lovell to the front of the pack and clean air. Lovell later found himself behind Kincaid and the two trucks separated from the pack running nose to tail. "The dust was terrible," reported Brad, "It was really hard to judge braking distance and the turns were blinding. That was to our disadvantage but we never gave up the fight." Lovell finished the race in 2nd place to get the team its first podium finish of the season. "I think the whole team felt proud and it was really rewarding for me to know that we are back on pace!"
Lovell went on to qualify 3rd for the weekend's second race and the truck again showed its grip and speed by taking all 3 holeshots into turn #1 (wrecks caused 2 restarts). Again Lovell found himself battling Kincaid for the lead, a battle that continued until the mandatory caution. On the restart, Lovell got tagged my another truck and spun, sending him down the running order. "It's frustrating to get taken out and it has happened to us to much this season. Luck is always an aspect in short course and you got to shake it off when it is bad." Undaunted, Lovell fought his way back for a 5th place finish.
"We had a glimpse of success this weekend that really motivated the team. This type of racing is not for the faint of heart. It takes fortitude. The team is everything so a heartfelt thanks to the friends and family who helped me this weekend and our group of dedicated sponsors that are letting me live a dream. A challenging start to the season but we are getting on track!
The next race for the team is TORC - July 19th & 20th in Bark River, MI. Be sure to catch the TV marathon of action from Bark River and Crandon on NBC Sports July 13th starting at 5pm EST.
